Closure of the Dairy Crest site, formerly Unigate, is announced in June 2007, with the loss of over 160 jobs. It is a body blow to the town, the closure of the last big employer in the town. “How much more can this town take?” asks Totnes Times, adding “The end of an era – ‘it’s quiet in there'”.
The site’s social club had been built, in a great act of community solidarity, with contributions from workers’ pay packets over many years, was once home to 15 skittles teams. It closed too. The town lost much more than just jobs.
